Exhibition Animaliers

Animaliers of animal artists are sculptors or painters who specialize in a realistic depiction of animals. We have compiled a beautiful quartet of extraordinary artists to exhibit in our gallery together; Hélène Arfi, Michel Bassompierre, Jos Dirix and Greta Van Puyenbroeck. It is an unique opportunity to get to know this art movement better – or to explore it further- and to rediscover the animal world.

Hélène Arfi

The French Hélène Arfi has dedicated herself to bronze sculptures that have a very dynamic energy, yet are also graceful and elegant. Animals are the protagonists in her universe, especially the birds she loves to observe. The expression of the sculptures of Arfi are only amplified by her accurate sculpting with an impressionistic flair, the patina accentuates the energy of her sculptures.

Michel Bassompierre

Michel Bassompierre brings bronze and marble to life. His sculptures of bears, horses, elephants and gorillas are touching, especially because of their friendly appearance and signature curves. This French artist is not only one of the most important contemporary animaliers, Bassompierre succeeds in influencing this art movements with his own unique style.

Jos Dirix

Bronze horses and bulls that are beaming with strengths and life. No weak statues, but dynamic Jos Dirix creations. In Knokke one is now able to discover the work of this internationally renowned animalier. Dirix as an artist is always in search of the ideal form. He has mastered creating tension and dynamism and manages to capture a single, sudden moment of these animals’s lives in bronze.

Greta Van Puyenbroeck

And last, but not least, Greta Van Puyenbroeck, according to our own humble opinion, one of the best Belgian animaliers. Van Puyenbroeck captures her animals in bronze like a virtuoso, showcasing unique and subtle layers. For this Belgian artist there exists nothing but sculpture. It is the essence.

Our animaliers are accompanied by some of our household names: Mark Dedrie, Ewoud De Groot, Paul Villinski, Chris Maynard, Tim Flach, Marc Slootmaekers, Renso Tamse, Simon Gudgeon, Pieter Vanden Daele and many more. ‘Animaliers’ is free to visit until 11th July 2022.
