Paul Villinski

Beautifully orchestrated flocks of butterflies that form an organic whole. Those are the abstract, three-dimensional ‘paintings’ by the artist, Paul Villinski. Villinski’s butterflies are a definite must-see. Only in Knokke, because Early Birds Art Gallery is the sole representative of this artist in Belgium.

Sculptural murals with aluminum butterflies

For more than 30 years, this American has been creating large-scale installations with individual, aluminum butterflies. The son of an airline pilot, his American sculptor has been fascinated by flight from an early age. Butterflies thusly are a logical choice, but other aspects can be found in his work, such as airplanes. We even sense a touch of Panamarenko.

Attached to the aluminum butterflies, is a beautiful story. Cans found lying in the streets of New York City form the basis. These cans are collected and are recycled in Villinski’s atelier into his signature butterflies. The delicate creations get a layer of black or white paint, sometimes even a deep blue, gold or silver hue.
